What does Hamlet's madness accomplish?

When Hamlet feigns madness, I know it's part of his plot to get revenge on Claudius, but what is the ultimate result of? Claudius doesn't even really believe he's mad... It just doesn't seem to accomplish anything. Does anyone even know anything that it influences? Like a decision by someone in the play?
