What's wrong with the generator on my '77 RV?

1977 Georgie Boy Cruise Master(Air?) RV, Onan Generator, Dodge 440 Chassis...try starting the generator, sounds like it starts, but stops when the start button is released...My uncle believe this to be the Voltage Regulator. Is there a way to verify this? Something else to look at?? Thanks
