4 year old cat not using litter box?

i have a 4 year old ally cat. he was fixed years ago. but just about a month ago he stopped using hhis litterbox to pee. he still does "everything else" in his litter box but he pees in the living room ect. he does have hair loss on his legs and ears if that makes a difference. is there a way to help him without going to the vet. any training sprays that arent too expencive that might work?
